The Selby Family and Selby General Hospital
Print This Page

Over the years osteopathic physicians medical services spread throughout the Mid-Ohio Valley, both in Ohio and West Virginia. More and more people turned the physician group that had their medical practice at the Osteopathic Clinic on Marietta's famous Putnam Street. The clinic opened in 1926. Among those to use the services of the osteopathic physicians were members of the Selby Family. The clinic grew and was incorporated as a hospital and was named the Marietta Osteopathic Hospital. Frank Selby thought having two hospitals in Marietta would make them competitive and therefore, make both hospitals better.

As the Selby family became more involved in their humanitarian efforts, they gave more financial support to the osteopathic hospital. They helped the hospital to expand in order to meet the demands on it. The Selby family donations also helped to build an addition to the hospital.

By the late 1950s, the hospital outgrew the Putnam Street location and once again the Selby family donated approximately $65,000 to build a new hospital. The hospital's board of trustees then renamed the hospital, Selby General Hospital in 1958. The construction began in 1964 on the current hospital located at 1106 Colegate Drive, Marietta. The doors were opened in 1965 and still bare the name of Selby with pride.

The Selby Family was highly respected by the community-at-large. In 1938 Homer Baumgardner dedicated his book, Marietta The Beautiful, to Mr. and Mrs. Francis Selby.
